Junior Sports Programme July 2007 Update
FOOTBALL
Sam Lucas
Sam attended Leicester Football Academy from the age of nine has now been selected to take part in the Catholic School Federation Games representing Great Britain in Hungary this month. The Junior Sports Programme was able to assist towards his costs.
Lowlands Junior Football Club
Lowlands Football Club’s junior tournament which was held on the 16th and 17th June.
Collingham Football Club
Over 86 teams representing 26 different clubs (over 600 children) competed in the tournament held over two weekends in June with age ranges including under 7’s.8’s11’sand 12’s. We were able again to assist in providing trophies, practice balls and bags for the event.
Southwell Junior Tournament
The junior tournament was held on the weekend of the 14th and 15th July. The Junior Sports Programme provided practice balls and bags, water bottles plus the annual Hodgson Elkinton fair play award shield, in addition awards were granted for the under 8 and 9 group.
SWIMMING
Boston Amateur Swimming Club
Nearing an end to yet another busy year of swimming, and following the withdrawal of funding from the Local Authority, the club has had to work particularly hard to raise money to cover this loss.
A successful race night (with clubs swimmers and not horses) with races and swimmers being sponsored raised in excess of £1500 which helped our cause considerably the Junior Sports Programme also contributed to this event.
The club's summer championships were yet again very successful with over 100 swimmers entering of which all achieved at least 1 personal best time. Medals were given out to the first three in each age group along with trophies for first place.
The club is currently in contention for winning both the Fenland and Anglian leagues.
It is now the club's intention to achieve Swim 21 status and also secure a main sponsor to help with funding and keep them solvent. The next main event for our club will be our annual Open Meet, which this year will be held at Grantham Pool in January.
LACROSSE
National Pop Lacrosse Tournament
The tournament was held on Sunday the 10th June at the University of Hertfordshire. Two teams qualified from the East Midlands, West Bridgford and St Peter’s Church of England from East Bridgford, joining 24 teams out of the original 500 who entered the qualifying rounds. St Peter’s started slowly however showed great character and skill in winning the Plate competition, a wonderful achievement.
Pop Lacrosse Teachers Course
The course was held on Monday the 2nd July at The Grove School in Newark, sports coordinators from the family of primary schools attended, plus representatives from the Minster school in Southwell, and Highfield School Newark. The game of pop lacrosse was very well received and hopefully the Junior Sports Programme loan scheme plus regular tournaments will start in the autumn.
Lincolnshire Youth Games
Pop Lacrosse was an exhibition sport for the first time at the games. Many children took the opportunity to the “have a go sessions”, and a number of teachers and SDO’s took details of the Junior Sports Programme which was promoted at the event.
ANGLING
Our sponsorship with the Salmon and Trout association’s casting competition continued for this years Lincolnshire show where schools competed for the Hodgson Elkington Trophy. Nine schools entered allowing many children to experience the sport for the first time. The eventual winners were Scampton primary school.
TENNIS
Heighington Tennis Club Tournament
Unfortunately this year’s tournament had to be cancelled; however we were pleased to confirm our continued sponsorship for the 2008 event.
RUGBY
North Kesteven Ladies under 18 team received assistance towards the purchase of equipment (Report Awaited)
HOCKEY
Newark Hockey Club
The Newark Otters and Beavers Award evening was held on Friday the 20th April at The Bearings in Newark. For the first year the Hodgson Elkington Fair play awards were presented. The winners were Under 10’s Rebecca Beeching, Under 11’s Frances Taylor and Under 13’s Eleanor Johnson and Sarah Johnson.
Nottingham Highfields Hockey Club
Shona McCallin, who was a member of Newark Otters and Beavers, now playing for Highfields, has been selected to play for England Under 16 team in the home international tournament which takes place in Cardiff between the 24th and 27th July. The Junior Sports Programme were please to assist in making a contribution towards her travelling expenses for the event.
OTHER NEWS
Friends of Mount Pleasant Award’s Evening
The event was held on the 20th July, and for the first year the Hodgson Elkington “Player of the Year” trophy was presented covering all sports played at the school.
